Army version of Brahmos missile successfully testfired

This was also the first time that the missile launch was carried out taking the final user configuration, integrating the mobile command post and the mobile launch system. Trained Army personnel operated the system and conducted the launch using very sophisticated fire control system installed on the launcher itself.

Brahmos supersonic cruise missile has been inducted by the Indian Navy so far and is close to induction in the Army too while a Air-to-Ground version is being developed.

This mobile launch system is based on a platform of Tatra 12 X 12, specially designed for carrying three BrahMos missiles and to have autonomous capability linked with mobile command post. The vehicle manufactured by BEML can turn 180 degrees making it possible for use in cross country purposes. The missile has a maximum range of 290 kms.

The name of the missile is derived from the Brahmaputra river and the Russian river Moscova. The launch was witnessed by distinguished scientist and Chief Executive Officer cum Managing Director of BrahMos company Dr. A Sivathanu Pillai, who is also the Chief Controller (R&D) of the DRDO, DG Artillery, senior Army officials, scientists from DRDO and officials from the Ministry of Defence.
